Safadi discusses war on Gaza, Lebanon with French, Spanish counterparts

AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot met on Sunday to discuss the urgent need for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon. 

Both ministers warned of the serious dangers posed by the escalating violence in the region, stressing the necessity of stopping further escalation, according to a Foreign Ministry statement. 

Safadi and Barrot also emphasised the importance of delivering immediate and sufficient humanitarian aid into Gaza and Lebanon, reiterating their countries' commitment to continued cooperation in providing such assistance. 

Safadi also commended French President Emmanuel Macron's decision to stop arms supplies to Israel, which have been used in Gaza, calling on other nations to follow suit.

The top diplomat also said that the decision aligns with international law and shared human values, noting that Israel's ongoing aggression in Gaza and Lebanon, its violations of Palestinian rights in the West Bank, and breaches of international law and the UN Charter threaten not only regional security but also international stability, including European security.

Safadi reiterated that the only path to lasting peace, security, and stability is the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state along the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with the two-state solution, expressing appreciation for France's continued support of this solution.

Also on Sunday, Safadi and Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation José Manuel Albares discussed efforts aimed at achieving an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, emphasising the importance of uniting all efforts to achieve this objective.

During the meeting, held on the sidelines of King Felipe VI of Spain’s visit to the Kingdom and his talks with His Majesty King Abdullah, Safadi warned of the catastrophic consequences of the ongoing escalation in the region, according to another Foreign Ministry statement. 

Safadi and Albares underlined the importance of King Felipe VI’s visit to the Kingdom, reiterating their commitment to boosting the friendship between the two countries and exploring broader cooperation in various fields.

Safadi also expressed gratitude to his Spanish counterpart for Spain’s ongoing support in helping Jordan address the challenges posed by regional crises and for supporting economic development programmes.
