AMMAN — The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) has recently spotted the oriental honey buzzard (also called crested honey buzzard) for the first time over the Azraq Wetlands Reserve.

Reserve Director Hazem Khrisha on Wednesday said that this rare bird has been spotted earlier in the southern region of the Kingdom but it is the first in the eastern desert, mainly in Azraq, according to a RSCN statement.

The bird belongs to the accipitridae family and is a bird of prey that feeds on honeycomb, bee larvae, small mammals, reptiles and other birds, the statement noted.

The annexation of Al Azraq basin to the reserve in 2017 provided an opportunity for several species to live, breed and nest on the sides of the basin, according to the statement.
