AMMAN — In their joint efforts to promote sustainable development and protect biodiversity, Leaders International and the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) announced on Sunday the launch of a two-year initiative in Eastern Badia, in the Azraq region, aiming to raise environmental awareness, promote sustainable tourism and empower local communities in the region. The project is funded by the Shiraka Fund of the Embassy of The Netherlands in Jordan.

In its first year, the project will provide support through field research and various studies to help conserve nature and promote green growth in the Shaumari Wildlife Reserve and the Dahek Natural Reserve.

In the second year, the project will focus on implementing strategic initiatives to improve infrastructures, enhance visitors’ experience and promote sustainable tourism by developing innovative tourism experiences such as accommodation, local experiences, adventure activities and more.

It will also support the local community through awareness campaigns, training programmes and support for small and medium sized projects to promote sustainable opportunities in the region.

Dutch Ambassador Harry Verweij said: “Jordan is renowned for its stunning landscapes and cultural heritage. This project, in partnership with Leaders International and the RSCN, reflects the mission’s commitment to preserve these treasures while promoting their sustainable use through responsible tourism and empowering local communities.”

He also highlighted that the project is in line with The Netherland’s priorities in Jordan, as support for climate protection goes hand in hand with local economic development.
