AMMAN — The Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) on Sunday announced illuminating Italy’s Roman amphitheatre, the Colosseum, in pink hues inspired by the city of Petra.
The lighting marks the twinning of the two World Wonders, both listed among the New Seven Wonders of the World, according to a PDTRA statement.
PDTRA Chairman Fares Breizat stressed the significance of this cultural and tourism cooperation between Jordan and Italy.
He noted that the twinning agreement between Petra and the Colosseum stands as an “inspiring” model of civilizational integration and reflects joint efforts to protect and promote human heritage, thus enhancing the global visibility of such landmarks.
Breizat added that the authority has signed, and will continue to sign, similar twinning agreements with other New Seven Wonders, such as Machu Picchu in Peru, the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal in India, Chichen Itza in Mexico, and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil.
He stressed that efforts are underway to finalise additional twinning agreements with global landmarks, with a focus on expanding future marketing opportunities among these sites.
The initiative aims to achieve shared goals in promoting cultural tourism, safeguarding heritage, and boosting international cooperation.
Director of the Colosseum and Head of Cultural Interpretation at the site Federica Rinaldi expressed her pride in this symbolic initiative, which brings together some of the greatest legacies of ancient civilizations.
Alongside the illumination of the Colosseum, which annually welcomes some 14 million visitors, informative videos about Petra will be continuously screened in the Colosseum Museum halls, offering visitors a visual journey through the rose-red city.
