AMMAN — Her Majesty Queen Rania on Monday met with UNICEF’s deputy executive director, Geeta Rao Gupta, to discuss the UN agency’s efforts to support women and children in Jordan.

Talks also covered the ongoing efforts to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza residents suffering as a result of the conflict in the area, according to a statement from Her Majesty’s office.

Gupta, who also serves as the vice chair of the board of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation, expressed her gratitude for the role that Jordan and its leadership play in supporting humanitarian relief efforts in Gaza as well as welcoming the large influx of Syrian refugees and absorbing Syrian children in the public school system.

Queen Rania commended UNICEF’s work in the region and Jordan, particularly in the development of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Maria Calivis, UNICEF’s regional director for the Middle East and North Africa region, Robert Jenkins, UNICEF’s representative to Jordan, and Maha Homsi, chief of child protection at UNICEF, also attended the meeting, the statement said.
