Public Works Minister unveils monument honouring Karak Castle martyrs

AMMAN — Minister of Public Works and Housing Maher Abu Al Samen on Monday unveiled  a monument dedicated to commemorate  the late Saed Maaytah and his comrades who scarified their lives seven years ago at Karak Castle to thwart a terrorist attempt to undermine the Kingdom's security.

The monument was erected on Al Manshiyah's main roundabout in Karak, the hometown of Maaytah, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. 

Retired Col. Mahmoud Maaytah, father of Col. Saed Maaytah who lost his life in the attack, said that his son led a group of defenders against a terrorist organisation that had taken refuge in Karak Castle, attempting to jeopardise the nation's security on that day.

Funded by the ministry, the memorial features a lion sculpture on a cement base decorated with a mural of Karak Castle, symbolising the nickname "Lion of the Castle" given to martyr Maaytah.

Ten people were killed in the terrorist attacks in Karak on December 18, 2016, including seven police officers. Four terrorists were also killed in the incident.
