AMMAN — The Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) has elected HRH Princess Basma Bint Ali as the head of the BGCI's advisory council for a three-year term. The council includes 32 countries from around the world, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

The decision was made in recognition of the princess’ efforts in preserving plants and her outstanding role in establishing the Jordan Royal Botanic Garden (RBG) and active international participation in plant and environmental care.

Princess Basma is the “Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)”, founder of RBG, and chairperson of the board of trustees of the Hashemite Fund for the Development of the Jordan Badia (HFDJB). The BGCI is an independent British organisation founded in 1987 to connect botanical gardens around the world into a unified network to preserve and protect plants from extinction.
