AMMAN — HH Prince Mired, president of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, on Sunday honoured Islam Jdou’, the first deaf person to obtain a PhD in Jordan, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The prince expressed his pride towards Jdou’s achievement, stressing that she is a role model for all, especially for people with disabilities, overcoming obstacles to pursue her education.

His Highness pointed out that images and stereotypes about people with disabilities presupposing that they are “incapable” are inaccurate. The prince said that these obstacles and barriers are what hinder people from exercising their rights to various aspects of life, especially education.

Jdou’ expressed her appreciation for the prince and council’s support, including hiring sign language interpreters in universities for deaf students, which contributed to empowering people with disabilities.

Expressing thanks to her mother, Jdou’ noted that she was the person behind her success, encouraging her continuously.
