PM, IMF executive director discuss cooperation, economic challenges

AMMAN — Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Bisher Al Khasawneh on Monday received International Monetary Fund (IMF) Executive Director Mahmoud Mohieldin to discuss ways to enhance bilateral cooperation to reach Jordan’s economic goals. 

Khasawneh, in the presence of Finance Minister Mohamad Al-Ississ, briefed Mohieldin on the economic challenges facing Jordan, which, he said, have been exacerbated by the regional situation and the coronavirus pandemic, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The premier said that the government was taking all measures to deal with the economic challenges, achieve sustainable development and attract investments to create jobs for Jordanian youth and help find solutions to poverty and unemployment.

He also said that despite Jordan’s challenges, the country has realised achievements in structural reform. He noted that the government's efforts are currently focused on promoting growth, recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic and addressing economic imbalances.

The government seeks to support the private sector's role in sustainable development through raising competitiveness and creating an investment-friendly environment, he said.

The IMF official praised the Kingdom's reforms and the government's approach to address economic challenges, stressing that international institutions have confidence in Jordan.
