AMMAN — Pleasant summer weather is forecast for the weekend after a week-long hot air mass subsided, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said on Thursday.
A drop in temperatures is expected on Friday, when temperatures will be around 32.5 ºC, the annual average for this time of the year, JMD meteorologist Amer Khalil said.
"Pleasant summer weather will prevail in mountainous areas, while it will be relatively hot in the badia between Friday and Sunday," Khalil told The Jordan Times.
Temperatures in the capital will reach a high of 32ºC and a low of 21ºC between Friday and Sunday, while winds will be northwesterly moderate, the department said.
"As of mid next week, temperatures will start to rise above the annual average for this time of the year," Khalil said.
The meteorologist highlighted that it was early to determine if the forecast hot weather would be a hot air mass or a heatwave, noting that the JMD would make an announcement later.
Authorities usually announce a heatwave when temperatures soar 5ºC above the annual average for a period of more than three days.
The country was affected last Friday by a hot air mass accompanied by a thermal seasonal depression, originating from the Indian subcontinent.
The hot air mass peaked on Monday when temperatures in Amman reached a high of 39ºC, before tapering off on Thursday.
Despite the high temperatures over the past week, no damage to crops was reported, said Agriculture Ministry Spokesperson Nimer Haddadin, according to the Jordan New Agency, Petra.
