AMMAN — Chairman of Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) Fares Breizat on Wednesday received a delegation from the US Congress, including members of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, over means to boost relations.
Talks also discussed cooperation opportunities in the fields of tourism, culture, and local community development, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Breizat highlighted PDTRA's efforts to establish "effective" partnerships with US nature reserves and enhance cooperation with US universities and institutions with shared interests, particularly in the areas of scientific research, protection of world heritage sites, and sustainable tourist development.
The two sides went over ways to support projects currently implemented in Petra City to enhance tourist infrastructure and improve visitor experiences, while preserving the city's cultural and environmental identity.
Touring the city's Nabateen key landmarks, the delegates learnt about efforts to preserve archaeological sites, develop tourist infrastructure, and empower local communities.
Also on Wednesday, Breizat discussed cooperation with French companies working in managing tourism events and activities to develop "quality" travel programmes that contribute to stimulating tourist activity in the city, especially during off-seasons with decreasing visitor numbers, Petra reported.
Breizat said that PDTRA seeks to diversify the tourist product within "strategic" partnerships with international entities, which have "advanced" expertise in organising major events.
The ancient city enjoys "unique" capabilities that qualify it to become a "permanent" destination for culture, tourism, and entertainment throughout the year, he highlighted.
Representatives of the French companies expressed interest in launching "innovative" events in the city, praising Petra's status as a "distinguished global" destination and its "promising" opportunities for starting joint initiatives that boost its position on the international travel map.
