AMMAN — The Kingdom’s oil shale reserves rank fifth worldwide in terms of quantity and can cover the country’s needs for around 275 years, Higher Council for Science and Technology Secretary General Khaled Shraideh said on Tuesday.

Speaking at the opening of the seventh Jordanian International Mining Conference, which he attended on behalf of HRH Prince Hassan, Shraideh said the mining sector’s contribution to the gross domestic product has declined, standing at 1.5 per cent compared to 4 per cent two decades ago.

A total of 28 papers will be discussed at the conference.
