Officials tighten food safety monitoring ahead of Eid Al Adha

AMMAN — With Eid Al Adha drawing near, the Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA) launched an intensive inspection campaign aimed to ensure food safety during the holiday.

In a statement sent to The Jordan Times, JFDA Director General Nizar Mheidat said: “The inspection teams will be conducting regular and around-the-clock field visits during Eid Al Adha, which focus on ensuring compliance of food business operators with regulatory requirements and food safety processes.”

Mheidat added that inspection teams will also ensure foodstuffs such as dairy products, fast food, sweets and nuts are safe and properly stored.

The JFDA has allocated a 24/7 hotline (117114) to receive inquiries or complaints from the public during Eid Al Adha.

Speaking with The Jordan Times, spokesperson of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply Yanal Barmawi said that “the ministry has intensified its monitoring and inspection efforts ahead of Eid Al Adha”.

Barmawi affirmed that the ministry continues to follow up on the prices of commodities and food supplies. Recently, the ministry said that it monitors the prices of apparel in particular, as many establishments offer fake discounts before Eid.

Omar Awad, president of the Jordan Association for Restaurants and Sweet Shops Owners, told The Jordan Times that the majority of restaurants follow food safety standards and guidelines.

“Food establishments ensure adherence to proper sanitation, particularly during holidays and peak workload periods,” Awad said.
