AMMAN — A police officer was killed and a sergeant was injured on Wednesday during the arrest of a wanted person in Naour, official sources said.
The victim, Captain Ziad Mashagbeh of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), received one fatal bullet to the back, reportedly fired by mistake by a fellow officer during the arrest, officials and a Public Security Department (PSD) statement said.
“Initial investigations point to accidental shooting during the arrest operation,” a senior official source told The Jordan Times.
The injured sergeant, also from the CID, is currently recovering at the King Hussein Medical Centre from a bullet that struck his hand, the PSD statement added.
The official source said “preliminary investigations indicated that the two officers were struck by the same bullet.”
The wanted suspect, with 11 judicial subpoenas against him and a stolen vehicle in his possession, was eventually taken into custody after resisting arrest and attempting to flee, according to the PSD statement.
“It was during the arrest that a bullet was accidentally discharged from an officer’s weapon and killed the police officer,” the PSD statement said.
The PSD statement said the police prosecutor is currently investigating the incident.
