Number of poisoning cases in Jerash reaches 58

Shigella bacteria is the cause of the poisoning cases reported in Jerash's Jubbah region, Director of Jerash Public Hospital Sadeq Ottoum said on Wednesday.

The number of poisoning cases, since Monday, has reached 58 infections, the Jordan News Agency, Petra reported, quoting Ottoum as saying. He noted that all patients, except five, have left hospital after receiving treatment.

Patients with Shigellosis, a bacterial disease caused by shigella, show symptoms such as fever, stomach cramps and diarrhea.

The infection is contagious and typically spread by contaminated surfaces, food or water, or sometimes person to person, Petra reported.
