AMMAN — Trade Minister Yousef Al Shamali on Sunday confirmed that bread prices will not be raised, regardless of the global spike in wheat prices.

In a meeting with the Parliamentary Committee on Economy and Investment, he stressed that Jordan is the only Arab country that has stocks of wheat and barley for over a year, which can last for 13 months and 8 days.

Jordan has the capacity to store wheat for 18 months of consumption, he said, noting that the high cost of wheat has prevented the Kingdom from purchasing it.

According to Shamali, Jordan did not purchase any wheat from Ukraine or Russia in 2022.

The minister explained that every kilo of bread is currently subsidised by 13 piasters, highlighting that there will be no change in its prices for Jordanians.
