AMMAN — Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) Spokesperson Nasser Rahamneh on Sunday announced the operation of a new system of cameras and radars aimed at enhancing traffic safety and reducing road accidents.

In statements to Al Mamlaka TV, Rahamneh noted that the system aims to ensure public safety and protect drivers, pedestrians and property alike.

He added that the cameras and radars have been installed in “clearly” announced locations to raise public awareness and encourage adherence to traffic regulations.

The system includes speed cameras, traffic light cameras, and "point-to-point" systems that calculate average speed between two fixed locations.

Rahamneh said that there are nine point-to-point sites on Airport Road and Jordan Street, alongside 20 traffic light cameras and 21 speed radars.

The system is expected to be fully operational by April 28, following a phased rollout over the coming days.

GAM said that the installation of the system followed “in-depth” traffic studies that identified areas with high rates of accidents and dangerous violations, including running red lights, excessive speeding, and pedestrian lane infringements.

The municipality also noted that the system is designed to curb sudden lane changes at intersections and illegal stopping on pedestrian crossings.
