AMMAN — Jordanians voiced their anger over the murder of a female university student on the campus of a private university in northern Amman on Thursday.
The student was rushed to hospital after being shot but she succumbed to her injuries, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
A manhunt has been underway for the perpetrator who fled the scene, according to Petra.
Meanwhile, social media platforms were flooded with tributes to the student with the trending hashtag #what sin did the girl commit to be killed.
“I believe all Jordanians strongly denounce the murder of the university student,” Ayah Kilani told The Jordan Times. Kilani added that the government should take a firm sentence for the murder of the “innocent girl”.
Faris Shaher questioned whether reactions to the crime will follow a similar pattern of public anger to past cases.
“One week on social media and people will forget what happened,” Shaher said, stressing that the harshest penalties possible should be taken against the killer.
Shaher added that the safety of students should be taken more seriously.
“We continuously hear of murders of women; it’s not as safe as we have been convinced,” Shatha Hammad, told The Jordan Times.
She also stated that the murderer should face the harshest sentences.
“I believe all Jordanians are grieving. How was the murderer able to smuggle a weapon inside a campus?” Hammad questioned.
“Parents have to question the safety of our educational institutions nowadays,” Hammad said.
Following the shooting incident, the university issued a statement in which it vowed to bring the perpetrator of this “terrible crime” to justice.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and her family. May her soul rest in peace,” the university statement read.
