AMMAN — Prime Minister Hani Mulki on Wednesday inaugurated a wastewater treatment plant in south Amman to irrigate crops.

The opening of the JD11 million project was also attended by minister of water and irrigation, Hazem El Nasser, alongside a number of other ministers, MPs and officials, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

During the visit, El Nasser briefed Mulki on the project’s progress, which aims to alleviate economic challenges faced by farmers and livestock breeders.

During the tour, Mulki was accompanied by Interior Minister Ghaleb Zu'bi, Environment Minister Yaseen Khayyat, Municipal Affairs Minister Walid Masri and Public Works and Housing Minister Sami Halaseh.

Mulki said that the government attaches “great importance” to the agricultural sector, especially livestock farmers, undertaking land reclamation and utilising modern technologies in treatment of wastewater.

The wastewater treatment plant is part of the National Water Strategy in Jordan for the years 2016-2025, which seeks to supplement the available water stock, Petra noted.

The prime minister called on young people in the region to take advantage of these “simple and cost-effective” projects, which will provide “decent incomes” through the cultivation of fodder and livestock breeding.

For his part, El Nasser said that the Ministry of Water and Irrigation has completed a number of programmes and has succeeded in supporting farmers and livestock breeders by providing a “fertile and attractive environment”, the news agency added.
