MP Dawaimeh says lawsuit against him dropped

AMMAN — MP Mohammad Dawaimeh on Sunday said the dispute with his colleague Fawaz Zu’bi, which led to a request to lift his immunity was an “altercation” that ended with reconciliation. 

In a statement made available to The Jordan Times, Dawaimeh, who is also the deputy chairman of the energy and mineral resources committee, voiced his appreciation of the government’s “enthusiasm” to respond to demands to lift deputies’ immunity. 

He expressed hope that the government would show the same keenness in activating the Illicit Fortunes Law, investigating corruption files and holding those responsible for corruption accountable. 

Dawaimeh attached a court paper to the statement showing that Zu’bi dropped the lawsuit against him, which accused him of slander, and so the court dismissed the case.

The Lower House Legal Committee on Thursday recommended that the parliamentary immunity of six MPs be lifted so that the judiciary can proceed with lawsuits citizens have filed against them.

According to Paragraph A of Article 86 of the Constitution, the lifting of immunity has to be passed by an overwhelming majority of MPs in a full House session.
