AMMAN — Labour Minister Nidal Katamine on Saturday directed the ministry’s inspectors to take strict measures against any facility that employs children under the age of 16, highlighting the negative impact of child labour on children’s physical and mental health.

Ayman Khawaldeh, director of the ministry’s inspection department, said the child labour section will conduct a comprehensive field study to identify the percentage and nationality of children working in the local market.

The results will be used to combat the phenomenon, he added.

In 2014, inspectors discovered around 1,316 cases of child labour, including 414 cases involving Syrian children, Khawaldeh said.

The inspectors issued 799 warnings and 285 fines to institutions found employing children.

The majority of child labour cases (40 per cent) are in the field of auto maintenance.
