Ministry checking compliance with law on hiring people with disabilities

AMMAN — The Labour Ministry on Sunday launched an inspection campaign to ensure institutions’ commitment to employing people with disabilities within the rates stipulated by law and opening crèches for working women.

According to the Labour Law, each institution of less than 50 employees has to employ one disabled person, while a 4 per cent rate of people with disabilities should be recorded at institutions with more than 50 employees.

Ministry figures show that 181 institutions do not abide by the law.

There are 900 private institutions that fall under Article 72 of the Labour Law, which obliges each facility employing 20 working women with 10 children less than four years old to open a crèche.

Applying the law would provide 5,000 job opportunities in child care, the ministry said.
