Meteorologists warn of more ‘possibly severe’ weather

AMMAN — The Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) warned citizens on Monday of “unstable weather” starting next Friday and lasting until Tuesday.

Heavy rain will be accompanied by lightning storms throughout the Kingdom, stated a report made available to The Jordan Times.

The weather is also expected to bring on dust-laden winds, especially in the south and east of the country.

“We urge citizens to drive carefully as the dust will blur the drivers’ vision, and the rain will cause slippery roads,” said Amjad Awwad, head of public relations at JMD.

Furthermore, the report warned citizens of the probability of mild floods in valleys and low-lying areas.

Haunted by the tragic Dead Sea flashfloods, citizens left comments and prayers dedicated to the 21 people who lost their lives in the incident on JMD’s Facebook page.

They also took the new weather report as a chance to refer to Minister of Education Azmi Mahafzah’s recent remarks that “the ministry was not aware of the weather conditions before the incident”.

Abu Hamzeh Fakeer commented, “Warn citizens not to take their kids to valleys in these conditions. Maybe someone will listen this time.”

“Please send the report to the Ministry of Education, just in case.” said Ali Hammad in another comment.

In preparation for the unstable weather, Greater Amman Municipality Spokesperson Mazen Farrajeen, told The Jordan Times that “no extra preparations have been taken yet, as we were only made aware of the report today, but we plan to take the necessary steps in the following days”.

According to Farrajeen, these steps include regular checks on the drainage systems, making sure the municipality’s phone lines are available for any complaints or inquiries and alerting the the Civil Defence Department for any large-scale rescue operations.
