Mercy Corps, PDTRA sign MoU for water project

AMMAN — Mercy Corps Jordan and the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA) on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a water barrier project in a valley and water routes leading to the Petra District under the project “Increasing the resilience and response of communities to floods”.
The agreement was signed by PDTRA Commissioner for Local Community Development and Environment Maram Freihat and Kari Diener, country director of Mercy Corps Jordan, according to a PDTRA statement. Under the agreement, both sides agreed to cooperate in implementing the infrastructure of the scheme and other initiatives to raise community awareness to combat such incidents.
Freihat highlighted the importance of implementing such activities that contribute to water harvesting, alleviate the impacts of flash floods and preserve residential and archaeological areas.
Diener said that the organisation’s goals are in line with its role in developing local communities.
The first stage of the project includes building 10 inhibitory dams.
