Member of banned party referred to court on terror charges

AMMAN — Authorities on Sunday referred Amman resident Rami Allan to the State Security Court (SSC), charging the Islamic Liberation Party member with “inciting terrorist acts” in violation of the country’s Anti-Terrorism Law.

According to defence attorney Mousa Abdullat, Allan was arrested on September 12 in the south Amman neighbourhood of Muqablein for distributing party pamphlets calling for the revival of the Islamic caliphate.

Allan’s trial is set to start in October.

If convicted, the 20-year-old faces up to 12 years in prison, judicial sources say.

Meanwhile, authorities arrested Yazen Al Mahrouq, a senior Islamic Liberation Party member, in east Amman on Saturday as he was distributing party pamphlets outside a neighbourhood mosque, according to party spokesman Mamdouh Qteishat,

Active across the region, the party is banned in Jordan for its calls to overthrow existing Arab governments and monarchies.

Over 25 party members have been arrested since March, 18 of whom are facing trial at the SSC.
