AMMAN — Marches took place across Amman and other governorates on Friday, with the participation of popular, partisan and union groups, alongside civil society organisations, to mark the anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba.
Participants reiterated Jordan’s support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and the Hashemite Custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
In the capital, a large march set off from Al Husseini Mosque in downtown Amman in response to calls by political parties, professional associations, grassroots groups and civil society institutions.
Similar marches were also held in several areas across the capital following Friday prayers, drawing broad public participation.
The events aimed to express support for the steadfastness of the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights, while renewing support for Jordan’s firm position on the Palestinian cause and rejecting attempts aimed at displacement and the liquidation of the Palestinian issue.
Participants also stressed adherence to the Hashemite Custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem and its role in preserving the city’s Arab and Islamic identity and protecting its sanctities.
Similar gatherings were also held in refugee camps across the Kingdom, particularly Al Talbieh camp, as well as in several cities and villages, where Jordanian and Palestinian flags were raised and chants rejecting displacement policies were voiced.
Participants told Petra that they were proud of the pivotal and historic role led by His Majesty King Abdullah in international forums in defence of the Palestinian cause, as well as his continued efforts to stop the aggression against the Palestinian people and mobilise political and humanitarian support for Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.
They stressed that Jordan’s official and popular stance embodies solidarity and loyalty towards the Palestinian cause.
Speakers at the events said that the “broad” participation from various segments of the society reflected the strength of Jordan’s internal front and its unified support behind the Hashemite leadership in defending the central causes of the Arab nation, foremost among them the Palestinian issue.
Participants stressed Jordan’s unwavering rejection of all forms of aggression, displacement and resettlement, reiterating support for the Palestinian people until they attain their legitimate rights and establish an independent state on their national soil with East Jerusalem as its capital.
