AMMAN — The Court of Cassation has upheld a Juvenile Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a young man to five years in prison after convicting him of attempting to murder a man in Amman in 2019.
The Juvenile Criminal Court declared the defendant guilty of attempted murder, stemming from “a heated dispute” with the victim.
Court papers said the defendant went to a deserted building with the victim, where he attempted to molest him.
"The victim resisted, so the defendant brought a rock and struck the victim on the head twice and fled," the court documents said.
The victim survived the assault after being rushed to a nearby hospital, the court papers added.
The defendant contested his ruling via his lawyer, who requested a lesser sentence “since he confessed to the incident”.
The defendant also stated that he was “a juvenile at the time of the incident” and that “now he is married and has children”.
The Juvenile Criminal Court’s attorney general asked the higher court to uphold the five-year sentence ruling.
The higher court ruled that the Juvenile Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and that the defendant was given the appropriate punishment.
The Court of Cassation bench comprised judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Ibrahim Abu Shamma, Fawzi Nahar, Majid Azab and Hayel Amr.
