Man given one year jail sentence for vandalising archaeological site

AMMAN — The Jerash Magistrates Court sentenced an individual to one year in prison and imposed a fine of JD3,000 for intentionally damaging archaeological artifacts in the city.

The court's decision confirms the severity of his crimes, which include vandalism and the defacement of state-owned structures, monuments and statues, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

In 2022, the individual painted several columns in the ancient city of Jerash black and defaced them.

The incident prompted an investigation, leading to his arrest and prosecution.

According to Jordanian Antiquities Law, such acts are punishable by imprisonment of one to three years, along with a fine of no less than JD3,000.
