Maaytah calls for empowering university students in political life

AMMAN — Independent Election Commission (IEC) Chief Commissioner Musa Maaytah on Wednesday emphasised the importance of enhancing the role of university students, notably empowering them in political life.

Young people engagement should be in line with the Royal directives and the output of the Royal Committee to Modernise the Political System (RCMPS) that has had an impact on the constitutional and legal amendments, including lowering the age of candidates in parliamentary election, Maaytah said.

Addressing deans of student affairs at public and private universities, Maaytah reviewed "I Participate/Universities" programme, noting that the programme aims to raise students' awareness in the areas of democracy, citizenship, the rule of law, political parties' role, fair elections and local governance.
