Lower House supports participation in anti-Houthi operation

AMMAN — The Lower House on Sunday expressed support for the anti-Houthi alliance led by Saudi Arabia in operation “Storm of Resolve” in Yemen, launched after the Houthi coup leaders “closed all doors to dialogue”.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the House said it is following with concern the accelerating events in crisis-hit Yemen and the accompanying regional developments that pose serious threats to the national security of the Arab world, especially the Gulf region.

The House also noted that using force to impose new realities on the ground in Yemen is “totally rejected”, stressing at the same time that dialogue is the only way to resolve the crisis there.

The Chamber hailed Jordan’s role in the anti-Houthi coalition, saying that the Kingdom’s participation in the military operations in Yemen is part of its pan-Arab obligations towards the region’s security and stems from its deep belief in the “inseparability of Jordan’s security from the Gulf region’s security”.

The military operation was initiated in response to an official request made by Yemen’s “legitimate and constitutional authority” to the Arab League and the United Nations Security Council, in line with the Arab Joint Defence Treaty and Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, His Majesty King Abdullah said in his address at the 26th Arab Summit on Saturday.

Also during Sunday’s session, the House referred two memoranda  to its legal committee which had been signed by a group of MPs requesting new amendments to the Chamber’s Rules of Procedure.

The House also endorsed the draft anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing law as referred from the Senate with minor amendments.

The law imposes a five-year prison term with hard labour on those laundering criminal cash flows as well as money generated by crime.

The draft law also stipulates a prison term of no less than a year and no more than three years on persons laundering money generated from a misdemeanour.
