Lower House approves 2022 Jordanian Medical Council draft law

AMMAN — The Lower House on Sunday endorsed the 2022 Jordanian Medical Council draft law. 

During a session, chaired by Lower House Speaker Abdulkarim Dughmi and attended by Prime Minister Bisher Al Khasawneh and Cabinet members, MPs approved Item 17 of the bill as referred form the Chamber's Health and Environment Committee after expanded discussions, where lawmakers suggested amendments to this item, before the entire House rejected them and voted for the committee's version.

Item 17 exempts certain categories from the Jordanian board exam mentioned in the bill, including doctors who received the highest specialisation certificate from abroad before December 13, 2001, provided that their certificate is verified by a specialised committee at the council, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Other exemptions include doctors who received the highest specialisation certificates from a country that Jordan has mutual accreditation agreements with, provided that the council accredits this certificate.

Replying to MPs' remarks, Health Minister Feras Al Hawari said that Item 17 aims at addressing several issues related to the medical human resources, such as shortages in medical personnel and developments in the medical sectors.

Hawari said that the item included difficult conditions for doctors, including the training of doctors under accredited programmes and practising medicine of the country of the certificate for three years, noting that these criteria are governed by certain regulations.

In previous sessions on the 24-item bill, the majority of MPs rejected a proposal by the committee to change the name of the draft law, and adopted the original text as referred from the government, which reads: "The name of the law is ‘2022 Jordanian Medical Council Law’ and will go into effect 60 days after its publication in the Official Gazette".

The House approved granting the council, which will be headed by the minister of health, a legal personality and financial and administrative independence with its headquarters in Amman.
