AMMAN — Taekwondo, the traditional Korean martial art, has grown into one of the world’s most widely practiced sports, combining physical skill, mental discipline, and strong moral values.
Among its key elements is Poomsae, the no-contact art of performing predetermined patterns of movements that embody the foundations of Taekwondo technique, balance, precision, and spirit, according to a Korean embassy statement.
Poomsae competitions highlight an athlete’s technical mastery and discipline, making them an essential pillar of Taekwondo practice globally.
Building on the “deep” historical, cultural, and sports ties between Korea and Jordan, cooperation in the field of Taekwondo has flourished for decades.
Taekwondo has become a widely popular national sport in Jordan, with an estimated one million practitioners spanning all age groups.
Jordan is also recognised worldwide for its remarkable achievements in the sport, producing champions who have excelled in international competitions, including the Olympic Games.
The close partnership between the Jordan Taekwondo Federation and Korean institutions has contributed greatly to the exchange of expertise, training opportunities, and technical advancement in Jordan’s thriving Taekwondo community.
In this spirit of friendship and cooperation, the Korean embassy hosted the Korean Ambassador’s Cup Poomsae Championship 2025 on November 28 in Amman in collaboration with Jordan Taekwondo Federation.
The event brought together athletes of the age group 9-16 years from clubs across the Kingdom, providing a platform for young practitioners to showcase their Poomsae skills and compete in an atmosphere of sportsmanship.
In his congratulatory remarks, Korean Ambassador to Jordan Pilwoo Kim praised young practitioners for their dedication and passion, emphasising that Poomsae is more than a sequence of movement – it is a discipline that builds patience, concentration and respect.
He recalled Taekwondo earned Jordan its first Olympic medal and expressed hope that future champions will emerge from today’s participants.
He also highlighted the “long-standing” friendship between Korea and Jordan, noting that Taekwondo continues to serve as a cultural bridge that brings the two nations even closer.
In his opening remarks, the secretary general of the Jordan Taekwondo Federation stressed that the championship represents more than a sporting competition, adding that it reflects “the deep and enduring friendship between Jordan and Korea, built on shared values, mutual respect, and ongoing cultural and athletic exchange.”
He highlighted Taekwondo as a powerful bridge connecting the two nations and a symbol of their strong partnership.
He also noted the remarkable growth of Taekwondo in Jordan, now one of the country’s most popular and widely practiced sports.
Jordan has earned a prominent position on the global Taekwondo map through outstanding achievements in continental and world championships, including the Olympic Games, successes made possible by the support of Jordan’s leadership and the dedicated efforts of coaches, athletes, clubs, and technical staff.
The event brings together talented practitioners from across the Kingdom to showcase discipline, skill, and the true spirit of Taekwondo. It also serves to further strengthen sports cooperation between Jordan and Korea and contribute to the continued development of Taekwondo in both countries.
Winners were honoured with medals and certificates, recognising their hard work and excellence.
