AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday called for stepping up Arab and international efforts to translate the ceasefire in the Palestinian territories into a prolonged truce that pushes towards a political solution that fulfils the legitimate rights of the Palestinians.

At a meeting with the president of the Senate and heads of a number of its committees at Al Husseiniya Palace, King Abdullah said there is no alternative to the two-state solution for achieving just and comprehensive peace, pointing to his frequent warnings of the implications of the stalemate in the peace process, according to a Royal Court statement.

His Majesty noted that Jordan is utilising all its capabilities and diplomatic ties in service of the Palestinian cause, adding that Jordan will continue its relentless efforts to safeguard the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, in line with the Hashemite Custodianship.

The King called for supporting the steadfastness of Jerusalemites, as well as alleviating the suffering of Gazans after the Israeli aggression.

Domestically, His Majesty highlighted the important role of the experienced members of the Senate in the upcoming phase, stressing the need to maintain cooperation among the executive, legislative and judiciary branches to achieve tangible progress in political, economic and administrative development.

For his part, Senate President Faisal Fayez pointed to the challenges facing Jordan as it enters its second centennial, highlighting the need for economic development to be a top priority.

Fayez called for gradually moving forward with political, administrative and social development, in line with structured plans tied to specific timeframes.

Attendees called for gradual and calculated advancements in political, economic and social reform, stressing the need to implement medium and mega projects tied to specific timeframes, as well as starting small projects to combat poverty and unemployment.

They also called for endorsing a post-COVID economic recovery plan, in partnership with the private sector.

The senators commended His Majesty’s firm support for the Palestinians and the steadfastness of the Jerusalemites, highlighting the importance of the Hashemite Custodianship of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.
