AMMAN — The Jordan Seismological Observatory (JSO) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources on Tuesday announced that it recorded 1126 seismic activities in 2023, out of which 281 were local tremors recorded within the Kingdom and its adjacent border areas. The JSO also recorded 469 regional earthquakes in neighbouring regions, including the Mediterranean, Cyprus, Turkey, Albania, the Red Sea and Iran. A total of 426 distant tremors were recorded, mainly concentrated in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Local seismic activity showed concentrations in areas such as the Dead Sea, the Gulf of Aqaba, the Arabah Valley, the Jordan Valley and adjacent border regions, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra. Highlighting the seismic landscape of Jordan and neighbouring areas, JSO President Ghassan Sweidan emphasised that seismic activity is aligned with the boundaries of the Arabian Plate in the Gulf of Aqaba and the Dead Sea Rift. He also highlighted that the results of seismic studies indicate that central and eastern regions have less seismic activity, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
