AMMAN — Secretary-General of the Royal Committee for Jerusalem Affairs Abdullah Kanaan on Monday stressed that Jerusalem must remain a top priority on the international agenda, despite ongoing regional and international conflicts.
Kanaan warned that the Israeli occupation continues to exploit every opportunity, domestically and internationally, to entrench its settlement policies and impose further restrictions on Jerusalem, its residents, and its holy sites, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
He also noted a recent escalation in settler-led incursions into Al Aqsa Mosque, carried out under heavy police protection, amid rising regional security tensions.
“What is happening in Jerusalem is not a temporary emergency, but a strategic objective of the far-right Israeli government,” Kanaan said, adding that this requires sustained political and media efforts to expose violations, document abuses and hold Israel accountable under international law.
He also stressed that international law recognises Jerusalem as an occupied city and calls for preserving its historical and legal status, ending settlement expansion, and stopping attacks on religious sites.
Kanaan also underscored the importance of not allowing major conflicts, including the Israeli-Iranian confrontation and the Russia-Ukraine war, to overshadow the ongoing Palestinian tragedy, marked by killing, displacement and systematic violations.
“The suffering continues amid international silence and the lack of serious political will to end the Israeli occupation, which jeopardises regional and international peace and security,” he said.
Kanaan reiterated that Jordan, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah, the custodian of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, remains steadfast in its support for the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights, regardless of the challenges or sacrifices involved.
