AMMAN — Jordan has welcomed the official recognition of the State of Palestine by the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Portugal, describing the move as a “reflection of growing international consensus on the need to end the Israeli occupation and uphold the Palestinian people's inalienable right to statehood.”
In a statement on Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the recognition was in line with international efforts to achieve a two-state solution, adding that the move supports the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
In another statement issued later on Sunday, following Portugal’s announcement on recongnising the State of Palestine, the Foreign Ministry hailed the move as reflecting the international consensus calling for an end to the occupation, the alleviation of the suffering of the Palestinian people, and the realisation of their inalienable right to establish an independent, sovereign Palestinian state in accordance with the two-state solution.
The ministry’s spokesperson Foad Majali expressed the Kingdom’s appreciation for the stance taken by the four countries, calling it a “clear and constructive” contribution to ongoing international endeavours aimed at resolving the long-running Israeli-Palestinian conflict in accordance with international law and the Arab Peace Initiative.
He reaffirmed Jordan’s longstanding position in support of the Palestinian cause, stressing the Kingdom’s commitment to working with Arab partners and the international community to realise the Palestinian people’s right to freedom, end the occupation, and establish an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.
He also underlined the need to halt ongoing violations against the Palestinian people and ensure accountability for those responsible.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas hailed Sunday's recognition as "an important and necessary step toward achieving a just and lasting peace in accordance with international legitimacy,” AFP reported.
A growing number of longtime Israeli allies have shifted their long-held positions as Israel has intensified its Gaza offensive.
