Jordan welcomes Luxembourg’s plan to recognise Palestinian State

AMMAN — Jordan has welcomed Luxembourg’s announcement of its intention to recognise the State of Palestine during next week’s United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the move as an “important step towards ending the Israeli occupation and advancing the two-state solution.”

Ministry spokesperson Fouad Mjalli said the Kingdom values Luxembourg’s position, which aligns with ongoing international efforts to support the recognition of an independent Palestinian state based on the pre-June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Mjalli reaffirmed Jordan’s firm stance in working alongside Arab allies and international partners to support the Palestinian people’s right to freedom, justice, self-determination, and the establishment of their sovereign state.

The United Nations General Assembly voted on Friday to endorse a declaration outlining "tangible, and irreversible steps" towards a two-state solution.

France, Britain, , Canada, Australia and Belgium are expected to formally recognise a Palestinian state, during the high-level UN General Assembly meeting on September 22.

Currently, the State of Palestine is recognised as a sovereign nation by 147 of the 193 UN member states. It is also recognised by the Holy See, the governing body of the Catholic Church and Vatican City.
