AMMAN — Jordan on Saturday participated in the Jerusalem Conference 2026, held in Cairo under the theme “Jerusalem: The Frontline Against Displacement and Annexation, and the Key to Achieving a Just and Lasting Peace.”
Jordan was represented at the conference by Executive Director of the Hashemite Fund for the Reconstruction of Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock Wafeeq Kilani, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported
The conference was organised by the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, with the participation of officials, diplomats, representatives of regional and international organisations and experts in Palestinian affairs.
Kilani said that the conference was held at a critical time amid mounting challenges facing the Palestinian cause, particularly in Jerusalem, due to escalating Israeli violations, which require a unified position and more effective international action.
He stressed that Jerusalem and its Islamic and Christian holy sites remain among the top priorities of His Majesty King Abdullah, who continues to lead diplomatic and political efforts to defend the city and its holy sites at regional and international forums, based on the Hashemite custodianship over Jerusalem’s holy sites.
Kilani said that the Israeli occupation cannot establish any legal rights or grant legitimacy to unilateral measures aimed at altering the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem.
He called on the international community to take concrete steps and establish effective mechanisms to implement relevant international resolutions and hold Israel accountable for continued violations against Islamic and Christian holy sites and residents of Jerusalem.
Such measures, he said, are essential to providing international protection and preserving the Arab identity of the holy city.
The conference featured an opening session and two main discussions. The first session, titled “Saving the Holy City and Preserving the Historical Status Quo of Holy Sites”, focused on protecting Islamic and Christian holy sites and maintaining the established historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem.
The second session, titled “Preserving Palestinian Presence, Rights and Sovereignty in Jerusalem and the Occupied Palestinian Territories in the Face of Displacement Policies and Illegal Settlement Expansion”, addressed efforts to safeguard Palestinian rights and counter displacement and settlement expansion policies.
At the closing session, participants underscored the importance of continuing regional and international efforts to protect Jerusalem, preserve its historical and legal identity and support the rights of the Palestinian people in line with international legitimacy resolutions.
