AMMAN — Foreign ministers from a group of Arab and Muslim-majority countries have “strongly” condemned Israel’s decision to appoint a diplomatic envoy to the self-declared region of Somaliland, calling the move a “blatant violation” of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a joint statement sent to The Jordan Times on Saturday, the ministers of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Somalia, Sudan, Libya, Bangladesh, Algeria, Palestine, Turkey and Indonesia voiced their “complete rejection” of the Israeli unilateral actions that undermine the unity and sovereignty of states.
They reaffirmed their “steadfast support” for Somalia’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as for its internationally recognised government as the sole representative of the Somali people.
The top diplomats also said that Israel’s move violates international law, the United Nations Charter and the Constitutive Act of the African Union, warning that such actions could set a “dangerous precedent” and risk destabilising the Horn of Africa, with broader implications for regional peace and security.
