Jordan, Syria sign agreement to boost media cooperation, combat disinformation

AMMAN — Jordan and Syria on Monday signed a media cooperation agreement aimed at boosting collaboration between the Jordan News Agency, Petra, and the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

The memorandum aims to facilitate the partnership between the two agencies by exchanging news, photographs, and media materials, as well as sharing technical expertise and coordinating efforts in international media forums. The initiative aims to elevate the quality of media content produced by both institutions and reinforce Arab media cooperation, according to Petra.

Minister of Government Communications and Government Spokesperson Mohammad Momani said that the agreement reflects the deep ties between the two countries and marks a significant step towards building stronger professional and technical partnerships in the media sector.

During a meeting with a SANA delegation led by Director General Ziad Al Mohameed, Momani stressed the importance of intensifying joint efforts to combat disinformation and fake news, noting that media awareness is the first line of defence against misinformation. He also reiterated Jordan’s “historic and steadfast position” in support of Syria’s territorial integrity, security, and stability, in line with His Majesty King Abdullah’s directives to enhance cooperation with Damascus across various fields.

Al Mohameed expressed appreciation for Jordan’s supportive stance, describing the agreement as a key step in advancing Arab media cooperation. He emphasised the importance of building media partnerships that counter rumours, reinforce trust in official institutions, and strengthen the Arab media presence internationally.

Petra Director General Fayrouz Mubaidin said the agreement encompasses cooperation in training, technical development, and content exchange, while also bolstering efforts to address misinformation.

Secretary General of the Ministry of Government Communications Zaid Al Nawaiseh affirmed the ministry’s readiness to support joint initiatives, highlighting the role of credible media in providing accurate information.

Momani added that greater coordination in the coming period will serve shared interests and reinforce an Arab media message rooted in truth, credibility, and responsibility.
