Jordan sees 113.5% annual rainfall average

AMMAN — Since the start of the rainy season, registered rainfall has increased to 113.5 per cent of Jordan's long-term average of 8.1 billion cubic metres, constituting 143 per cent of total downpours last year, the Water Ministry said on Thursday.

Precipitation levels during the same period of last year stood at 78.5 per cent of the annual average. 

The recent weather depression has raised precipitation to "good levels" compared to the annual average, according to a ministry statement.

About two million cubic metres (mcm) of water was channelled into dams across Jordan, increasing their storage to 122mcm, or 43.5 per cent of their total capacity of 280.759mcm. 

At the governorate level, Ajloun received the highest precipitation with 40.3 millimetres (mm), while Irbid received 25.8mm, Jerash 26.6mm, Balqa 23.9mm, Amman 20.7mm, Tafileh 14.9mm, Madaba 9.2mm, Karak 7.5mm, Mafraq 7.8mm, Zarqa 7mm, Maan 6mm and Aqaba with 2.9mm.
