Jordan Medical Association mobilises medical mission to Gaza

AMMAN — A total of 73 doctors have signed up to join the medical mission heading to Gaza from Jordan, according to an official. 

The Jordan Medical Association (JMA), in collaboration with the Jordan Pharmacists’ Association (JPA) and other professional associations in the Kingdom launched an initiative on Sunday to dispatch much-needed medical aid and volunteers to Gaza amid the Israeli assault. 

The move comes in solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza.

Muthaffar Jalamdeh, a JMA member, told The Jordan Times that the JMA opened the doors to volunteers and medical professionals willing to lend their expertise to the people of Gaza. 

“This initiative aimed to assemble specialised medical teams capable of providing vital medical assistance to the wounded and injured victims of Gaza,” Jalamdeh said. 

He added that over 73 doctors from different specialties already signed up to join the medical rescue team in Gaza. However, Jalamdeh highlighted that these numbers are initial, and it has been only two days since the opening of the volunteer registration through the JMA website. 

“The JMA’s efforts are ongoing to coordinate with government authorities to find a suitable mechanism for the medical teams to reach the Gaza Strip,” Jalamdeh added. 

Jalamdeh said that the ongoing attacks on Gaza led to severe shortage of medical personnel and a critical lack of medical supplies. 

He added that the JMA is trying to provide and secure medical supplies through available donations and attempts to deliver them through official channels, including the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation or any trusted entities capable of delivering medical aid as quickly as possible. 

Jalamdeh said that the JMA categorised medical teams based on the specific needs of the Gaza Strip. The specialties identified for the mission were general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, paediatric surgery, vascular surgery, plastic surgery for burns and other wounds, physical therapy and rehabilitation, anesthesiology and intensive care. 

The selection of these specialties was guided by the critical nature of injuries sustained during the conflict, Jalamdeh said. 

“Once the necessary approvals from official authorities are obtained, preparations for the medical mission will be going into full swing,” Jalamdeh added.

Mohammad Ababneh, Jordan Pharmacists Association President, told The Jordan Times that logistics are being arranged to transport the medical supplies safely to Gaza, overcoming the challenges posed by the conflict.

“We are waiting for the green light from the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation to start accepting medical aid and supplies and donations from individuals and pharmaceutical companies in Jordan,” Ababneh said. 

“In the darkest of times, Jordan is showing the world the unwavering commitment to alleviating the suffering of Gazan against Israeli attacks,” he added.
