Jordan hails Portugal’s planned recognition of Palestinian state

AMMAN — Jordan on Thursday welcomed Portugal’s announcement of its intention to officially recognise the State of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly session in September.
A Foreign Ministry statement described the step as an important move towards ending the Israeli occupation and supporting the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to establish an independent state based on the two-state solution.
Ministry Spokesperson Sufian Qudah said that the Kingdom values the announcement made by Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, viewing it as part of broader international efforts to advance recognition of a Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
He noted that the decision aligns with relevant UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
Qudah reiterated Jordan’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and its commitment to working with Arab nations and international partners to uphold the Palestinian people’s right to freedom, self-determination, and statehood on their national land.
