Jordan-EU meeting on radioactive waste management concludes

AMMAN — The closing meeting of an EU-funded project aimed at strengthening the capabilities of the Kingdom in the field of radioactive waste management was concluded on Wednesday.

The project, launched in 2017, aimed to support the capacities of the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) and the other related bodies in the field of radioactive waste management.

The event witnessed the participation of experts from the EU, in addition to officials from the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Planning and International Cooperation, Environment, as well as representatives from the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) and the EMRC.

Chairman of the EMRC Hussein Laboun, highlighted the importance of strengthening the commission’s regulatory and supervisory actions, calling for improving the legislative system related to nuclear safety and radioactive waste management, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Commissioner of the JAEC Rabie Abu Salim reviewed the key issues that the commission seeks to enhance through cooperation with the EU, notably the issuance of legislative documents and building the capacities of the JAEC's employees.
