AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Tuesday condemned Monday's terrorist attacks on Medina, home to the Prophet Mohammad's Mosque and the second-holiest site in Islam, and two other cities, according to a Royal Court statement.
During a phone call with Saudi King Salman Bin Abdulaziz, His Majesty voiced the Kingdom's solidarity with Saudi Arabia in facing terrorism and terrorist groups.
Also on Tuesday, His Majesty sent a cable to the Saudi King, condemning the attacks and voicing solidarity with Saudi Arabia and the Saudis against terrorism.
The suicide bombing in Medina came during sunset prayers at the mosque — where Islam's Prophet Mohammad is buried and which attracts millions of pilgrims each year, according to Agence France-Presse.
Monday's first attack happened in the western Saudi city of Jeddah, where two police officers were wounded in a suicide bombing near the US consulate in the early hours.
The interior ministry said a Pakistani resident, Abdullah Qalzar Khan, 35, carried out the Jeddah attack. He had been living with his wife and her parents in the city for 12 years, AFP reported.
The US embassy in Riyadh reported no casualties among consulate staff during the attack, which coincided with the US July 4 Independence Day holiday.
For its part, the Muslim Council of Elders condemned the terrorist attacks in the Saudi cities and issued a statement calling for intensifying international efforts to combat terrorist groups, Petra reported.
The Senate on Tuesday issued a statement condemning the attacks, in which it highlighted how these attacks on the Prophet Mosque are evidence that those who commit them are by no means related to the religion of Islam.
