AMMAN — The Foreign Ministry on Thursday strongly condemned the storming of the Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif by Israeli far-right national security minister Itamar Ben Gvir, alongside members of the Knesset and groups of extremist settlers under the protection of Israeli occupation forces.
The ministry denounced accompanying assaults on worshippers, provocative behaviour by extremists and Israeli forces, the raising of Israeli flags, and inciting calls by radical groups, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
It characterised these actions as a flagrant violation of the historic and legal status quo at Al Aqsa Mosque, a desecration of the holy site, an unacceptable provocation, and a condemned escalation.
Ministry Spokesperson Fouad Majali emphasised Jordan’s absolute rejection and condemnation of the ongoing incursions by Israeli ministers, Knesset members, and extremist settlers, facilitated by occupation forces.
He noted that these systematic incursions represent a blatant breach of international law, a clear violation of Islamic and Christian holy sites in occupied Jerusalem, and a reckless attempt to alter the status quo by imposing a temporal and spatial division of the site.
Majali warned against the consequences of continued incursions and violations targeting Jerusalem's holy sites and its historic and legal status quo, stressing that Israel holds no sovereignty over occupied East Jerusalem and its Islamic and Christian holy sites.
The spokesperson called on the international community to adopt a firm stance obligating Israel, as the occupying power, to cease its ongoing violations against holy sites in Jerusalem and put an end to provocative actions by Israeli officials and extremists, which reflect the Israeli government's policy of escalating tensions in the occupied West Bank.
Majali reiterated that the entire 144-dunum Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif complex is an exclusive place of worship for Muslims, emphasising that the Jerusalem Waqf and Al Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department, affiliated the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, is the sole legal authority managing all affairs of the mosque and regulating entry to it.
