AMMAN — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has “strongly” condemned the storming of Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif by the far-right Israeli minister of national security Itamar Ben-Gvir, under the protection of Israeli occupation authorities.
In a statement on Wednesday, the ministry denounced the incident as a “blatant” violation of the international law and international humanitarian law and “unacceptable provocation,” reiterating that Israel has no sovereignty over occupied Jerusalem or its Islamic and Christian holy sites.
The ministry’s Spokesperson Fuad Majali reiterated Jordan’s “firm rejection and strong condemnation of the repeated incursions led by the extremist minister.”
He said these actions constitute a breach of the historical and legal status quo of Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif and an attempt to divide the holy site temporally and spatially.
Majali warned of the consequences of the ongoing illegal and provocative violations against Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.
He also called on Israel, as the occupying power, to immediately halt all provocative actions, which are “part of the extremist Israeli government’s policy of dangerous escalation and unilateral measures in the occupied West Bank.”
He emphasised that Al Aqsa Mosque, with its total area of 144 dunums, is a place of worship exclusively for Muslims, reiterating that the Jordan-run Jerusalem Awqaf and Aqsa Affairs Department is the sole authority responsible of supervising the holy site’s affairs according to international law and the legal and historical status quo.
