AMMAN — Jordan has condemned Israel's approval of 2,126 new settler units in the occupied West Bank, describing the move as a “blatant violation of international law and a setback to efforts aimed at realising the two-state solution.”
In a statement on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs slammed the Israeli authorities’ decision as undermining the Palestinian people's inalienable right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The ministry spokesperson Fouad Majali reiterated Jordan's condemnation and “absolute” rejection of the far-right Israeli government's continued settlement expansion in the occupied Palestinian territories. He said the settlement projects entrench the occupation, fuel further expansion, and run counter to international efforts to achieve a lasting peace based on the two-state solution.
Al-Majali stressed that the settlement plans violate international law and international legitimacy resolutions, particularly United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334, which condemns measures aimed at altering the demographic composition, character and status of the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem.
He also referred to the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, which renders Israel's presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and the settlement construction and annexation measures in the occupied West Bank as unlawful and in violation of international law.
The ministry called on the international community to fulfill its legal and moral responsibilities by pressuring Israel to halt the dangerous escalation and illegal unilateral actions in the occupied West Bank.
Majali said that realising the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the establishment of an independent state on their national territory, remains the only path towards achieving a just and comprehensive peace that ensures security and stability across the region.
