AMMAN — First Vice Chairman of the Jordan Chamber of Commerce Nabil Khatib on Monday held talks with Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the Kingdom Priyangika Wijegunasekera focusing on ways of strengthening economic ties between the two countries through the visits of delegations and trade missions.

Khatib stressed the importance of encouraging the private sectors in both countries to explore areas of cooperation in trade, tourism and investment and called for intensifying visits by business delegations and supporting existing tourism cooperation between Jordan and Sri Lanka.

Wijegunasekera said that Jordanian-Sri Lankan relations have been developing both on the trade and investment fronts, besides diplomatic ties.

She highlighted that the bilateral relations, established in 1965, have witnessed ongoing growth and development.

She also voiced her country’s keenness to strengthen economic and trade relations with the Kingdom, which “enjoys a safe and stable business environment”.

Hisham Dweik, director general of the chamber, said that trade between the two countries had grown significantly in the first ten months of last year, reaching about $79 million.

Jordan offers products such as olive oil, Dead Sea salts and dates that meet the needs of the Sri Lankan market, he said.

Jordan’s main imports from Sri Lanka include plant products, tea, furniture, wood and corrugated paper, while the Kingdom’s main exports to Sri Lanka are textile products, fabrics and iron and steel products.
