AMMAN — Under the patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah, the 39th edition of Jerash Festival for Culture and Arts is scheduled to kick off on July 23, under the theme: "Here is Jordan... and Its Glory Continues."
The event will feature over 235 artistic and cultural activities, mainly concerts by prominent Jordanian and Arab stars, theatrical performances, a distinguished and unique cultural programme, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
A total of 140 poets will also take part, while exhibitions of fine arts and handicrafts will be launched.
The festival will also host folkloric performances from Jordan and Arab and non-Arab countries, and shows dedicated to families and children.
The festival, which will run until August 2, will be held in the ancient city of Jerash at the Southern and Northern Theatres, the Main Square, the Sound and Light Theatre, the Youth and Creativity Theatre (Artemis), and the Column Street.
In Amman, events will be held at the Royal Cultural Centre, the Roman Amphitheatre, the Hussein Cultural Centre, and the Zaha Cultural Centre, as well as other activities in several governorates.
Minister of Culture and Chairman of the Festival's Higher Committee Mustafa Rawashdeh noted the festival's "pivotal" role in conveying Jordan's message and cultural heritage, introducing national culture, promoting cultural tourism, and upholding the values of entrepreneurship and creativity.
Announcing the events of this year's edition, Rawashdeh said the festival's "continuity over four decades reflects the Kingdom's stability and security and confirms the event's solid foundation, marking a commitment to serious culture and art, rooted in authentic heritage".
The minister added that the festival's message is "inseparable from the comprehensive and sustainable" development made over 100 years, reflecting the Kingdom's humanitarian message and its political position.
On its significance, he noted that the festival is a "national cultural" institution aimed to promote national culture and identity, serve as a platform for intercultural dialogue, and create a space for joy.
Jerash Festival Executive Director Ayman Samawi said that this year's festival is witnessing more than 235 artistic, cultural, and literary events from 37 countries, held in the ancient city of Jerash and in several governorates, including Amman, Jerash, Madaba, Irbid and Zarqa.
